Shirley’s project is a remarkable testament to our proud collaboration with Spruce It Up Garden Centre. This build presented unique challenges as we worked to fit a large 24’x12’ PVC deck snugly between the house and the garage, all while ensuring the deck height remained below the man door into the garage. To kick off the project, we brought in our mini skid steer to remove several yards of dirt and landscaping, allowing us to sink the deck into the ground. This task was particularly challenging due to the limited space we had to work with, but once completed, we moved on to building the deck’s framing. When constructing a deck close to the ground, we employ a technique that involves hanging the joists on the support beams rather than laying them on top. This method helps prevent the beam from sinking into the ground, where it could be susceptible to premature rotting. Given the obstacles posed by the house and garage, including an AC unit and various utility feeds, we needed to install more cement piles than usual to ensure a sturdy foundation. After navigating these challenges and finding solutions to meet Shirley’s needs, we completed the framing and proceeded to finish the deck. We used Premium Line PVC decking by TimberTech/Azek, featuring a stunning color combination of Dark Hickory for the border and trim, paired with Coastline for the main surface. To enhance the ambiance, we installed 10 LED lights on the surface and another 10 lights in the risers and access points of the deck. Additionally, we constructed 108 feet of pressure-treated wood fencing, complete with four gates for Shirley and her neighbor. Once our work was finished, Spruce It Up came in to handle the landscaping in the remaining areas of the yard, which had mostly transformed into a beautiful deck by the time we completed our work. At YYC Builders, we thrive on challenges and take pride in meeting our clients’ unique needs. We love delivering products that they can enjoy for many years to come, and Shirley’s project is no exception!
