Taj’s project is one of YYC Builders’ proudest achievements! This impressive second-story walkout deck is packed with incredible features and was beautifully finished with TimberTech’s Sandy Birch composite, creating a stunning outdoor space for relaxation and entertainment. The process began with an initial consultation, where we provided a comprehensive quote along with a detailed drawing set for approval. Once we received the green light, a follow-up meeting allowed us to discuss the finer details and finalize the choice of composite materials. With building permits secured from the City of Calgary, we were ready to embark on the build. Our first step involved demolishing and removing a much smaller deck to make way for this expansive new structure. Preparation was key, so we carefully cut out the stucco to accommodate the ledger board and flashing. After securing the ledger board in place, we installed four 10-foot screw piles to support the large 4-ply 2×12 beam. We opted for a larger beam than typical (3-ply 2×8) to reduce the number of screw piles needed, ensuring that our support posts would not interfere with any windows on the lower level. Once the support posts and beam were in place, we moved on to the framing, setting the stage for the deck’s remarkable features. One standout element is the waterproof Rain Escape system by Trex, which creates a dry space underneath the deck by running troughs between the joists. An eavestrough positioned on the back side of the beam channels water flow, preventing any drips from passing through the deck and ensuring the space below remains dry and usable. With the framing complete, we finished the top of the deck with composite materials and adorned the underside with aluminum soffit for a polished look. While we were constructing the deck, we also had a custom steel spiral stair set manufactured, which was later installed by the manufacturer, adding elegance and accessibility to the design. To complete the project, we brought in the stucco team to touch up the areas where the ledger was placed and to finish the support posts with color-matching stucco, ensuring a seamless appearance. The deck features stunning topless glass railing supported by aluminum posts mounted to the fascia, not only enhancing safety but also creating additional deck space and a beautiful finish. This project required extensive planning and collaboration with various specialty sub-trades to bring everything together, resulting in a true masterpiece. We are thrilled with how Taj’s project turned out, and it stands as a testament to the dedication and craftsmanship of our team!
