One of YYC Builders proudest projects! This massive 2nd story walkout deck has a ton of amazing features, and was finished with TimberTech’s Sandy Birch composite.
Process: Followed by the initial consultation, we provided a quote on the project along with a drawing set for approval. Once approved, we had a follow up meeting to go over the fine details and select the composite. We then acquired building permits from the City of Calgary and were ready to proceed with the build.
First, we demolished and removed a much smaller deck. From there, we prepared the home by cutting out the stucco to make way for the ledger board and flashing. Once the ledger board was on, we had 4 10ft screw piles installed that would prop up the large 4 ply 2×12″ beam. We used a larger beam than typical (3 ply 2×8) to allow for less screw piles to ensure our support posts were not in line with any windows on the lower level. The support posts and the beam went up then we moved onto framing. Next, a great future of this deck is the waterproof Rain Escape system by Trex. The system creates a dry space underneath the deck by running troughs between the joists. There is an eavestrough positioned on the back side of the beam, which channels water flow that otherwise drips through the deck.
We then finished the top with composite, and the underside of the deck with aluminum soffit. As we were building all of this, we were having the custom steel spiral stair set manufactured, which was then installed by the manufacturer. We then brought the stucco team to touch up where the ledger was placed, as well as to finish the support posts with color matching stucco. Lastly, the deck also features topless glass railing supported by aluminum posts that were mounted to the fascia of the deck, creating a little extra deck space and a beautiful finish. Tons of planning went into this project, along with many specialty sub trades to bring it all together – resulting in a true masterpiece!
